Virtues of Surah Al-Baqarah

The Surah Baqarah is the greatest Surah of the Holy Quran. And in Madinah Tayyaba, the revelation of this Surah began first, and different verses continued to be revealed in different eras.
And One of its verses:

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ يَوْمًۭا تُرْجَعُونَ فِيهِ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ

(2:281)

So, the very last verse of the Holy Qur’an was revealed on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah in 10 Hijri at the place of Mina while the Holy Prophet () was engaged in performing the duties of the Farewell Hajj.
And eighty, ninety days after that, the Prophet (ﷺ) passed away, and the chain of divine revelation ended forever.

Benefits and blessings of Surah Al-Baqarah

This Surah is the largest surah of the Holy Quran and contains many commandments. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said,

Surah Baqarah is the Sanam of the Qur’an and the Dharuh of the Qur’an. (Ibn Kathir)

Sanam and Zaruh are the highest and best parts of everything, just as the hump of a camel is called “Sanam.”
At the time of the revelation of each of its verses, eighty (80) angels used to descend in front of him.
In a hadith of Hazrat Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه).

There is one verse in this Surah which is the best and best of all the verses of the Holy Qur’an, and that verse is Al-Kursi. (Ibn Kathir)

Ibn Arabi said: “I heard from my elders that there are 1,000 commandments, 1,000 prohibitions, 1,000 pearls of wisdom, and 1,000 news and anecdotes in the Surah Al-Baqarah.”
This is why when Hazrat Umar Farooq (رضي الله عنه) recited Surah Al-Baqarah with Tafsir, he spent twelve years in its studies, and Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله عنه) recited this Surah in eight years.
That is why after Surah Al-Fatiha, the first Surah, Surah Al-Baqarah, was placed, and it was started with “ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ” and it was indicated that the straight path (mentioned in Surah Al-Fatiha) is this Book.
After that, in this Surah, the basic principles of faith, monotheism, mission, and hereafter were briefly explained, and finally, faith was described in detail. And in between, every aspect of life, worship, affairs, society, morals, etc., have been mentioned.

Benefits and virtues of reading Surah Al-Baqarah

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said,

Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, for its recitation, is a blessing and its omission is regret, and the wrongdoers cannot control it.

Commentators have quoted that in this place, “Ahl al-Batil” refers to “Magicians.” It means that no magic will affect the reciter of this surah.
And in another hadith, the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

The devil flees from the house in which Surah Baqarah is recited. (Ibn Kathir)

Hazrat Abdullah Bin Masoud Radiyallahu Anhu said:

The ten verses of Surah Baqarah are such that if a person recites them at night, the jinn and the devil will not enter the house on that night, and his family will not face any calamity, illness, sorrow, etc. on that night. will come
And if these verses are recited on a madman, he will recover. Those ten verses are:-
Four verses at the beginning of Surah Baqarah, then three verses in the middle, i.e., Ayat al-Kursi, two verses after that, and then the last three verses.

In another blessed hadith it is said:

Allah Ta’ala concluded Surah Al-Baqarah with two verses that He gave me from the treasury under His Throne, so learn them, teach them to your wives and children, etc.

NOTE: Surah Baqarah is a Madani surah. It was revealed after the migration to Madinah, although some of its verses were revealed during Hajj in Makkah. But since that time was after the migration, it is called Madani in the terminology of commentators.
