Why do we need to learn the Quran?

In the Quran, Allah Subhanahoo Wata’ala said to His beloved Prophet ﷺ:

“Recite the Quran in the name of your Allah who created. Created man out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood. Recite and your Allah is the Most Generous.”(Al-Alaq 1-3)

And Holy Prophet ﷺ said that:

“The best amongst you is the one who has learned the Quran and then taught It” (Bukhari).

The Holy Prophet ﷺ said on the occasion of the last Haj:

“I am going to leave you two things: If you hold them firmly, you will never go astray. A book of Allah and my Sunnah.”

Types of Quran Recitation

The Qur’an was revealed in an environment that was known for its numerous tribes and ascents. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Jibril عليه السلام taught me to recite in one style (hurf). I replied to him and kept asking him to give more (styles), till he reached seven styles”.

Muslim narrated that Jibril عليه السلام said to the Prophet ﷺ:

“Allah has commanded you to recite the Qur’an to your people in seven ahruf (styles), and in whichever harf (style) they recite, they would be right”.

It is Allah’s mercy that the Qur’an was revealed in 7 ahruf to eliminate hardship and enable Muslims to recite or memorize it whichever is easier for them.

The following are the narrators of seven styles of the Quran:

• Nafi’ ibn ‘Abdul-Rahman al-Laithi al-Madani (d. 169 A.H)
• ‘Abd Allah ibn Kathir al-Dari al-Makki (d. 120 A.H.)
• ‘Abu ‘Amr Zabban ibn al-‘Ala’ al-Mazini al-Basri (d. 154 A.H.)
• ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amir al-Yahsobi al-Shami (d. 118 A.H.)
• ‘Asim ibn Abi al-Najjud al-Asadi al-Kufi (d. 128 A.H.)
• Hamzah ibn Habib al-Zayyat al-Kufi (d. 156 A.H)
• ‘Ali ibn Hamzah al-Nahwi-known as al-Kisai’ (d. 189 A.H.)

10-Qirats of the Holy Quran

Qir’at refers to the different manners of reciting the Holy Qur’an. Each Qir’at has its own Tajweed rules. Following are the 10-Qir’ats of the Holy Qur’an:

1. Naafi’ Al-Madani (Madinah). Imam Malik recited in this manner. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal often recited in this manner.
2. Ibn Katheer al-Makki (Makkah). Imam Shafi recited in this manner.
3. Asim al-Kufi (Koofah). Imaam Abu Hanifa recited in this manner. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal often recited in this manner.
4. Abu Amr al-Basri (Basra)
5. Ibn Aamir ash-Shami (Syria)
6. Hamzah Al-Kufi (Koofah)
7. Al-Kisa’ee
8. Abu J’afar Al-Madani (Madinah)
9. Yaqub ibn Al-Basri (Basra). Imam Bukhari recited in this manner.
10. Khalaf
