Obedience to the Prophet (ﷺ) and the noble companions of the Prophet

When we look into the lives of the honorable companions of the Prophet (رضي الله عنه), we can see how devotedly they fulfilled the right of loving the Prophet (). There was no corner of their lives that they did not scrutinize and then align themselves with the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ). Here are a few exemplary instances:

Our noble companion, Abu Bakr Siddiq

On one occasion, Sayyidna Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) said to the people:

Narrating the above tradition, ‘Aishah added: Abu Bakr refused that to her. Her said: I am not going to leave anything the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to do but I shall carry it out. I fear if I depart a little from his practice, I shall diverge (from the right path). As regards his sadaqah (property) at Medina, ‘Umar had given it to ‘Ali ad ‘Abbas (Allah be pleased with them), and ‘Ali dominated it. As for Khaibar and Fadak, ‘Umar retained them. He said: They were the sadaqah (property) of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), exclusively reserved for his purposes that happened, and for his emergent needs. Their management was assigned to the one who was in authority. He said: They are in that condition to the present day.(Sunan Abi Dawud)

Our revered companion, Umar Farooq

Abbas ibn Rabiah (رضي الله عنه) narrates:

Narrated `Abis bin Rabi`a: `Umar came near the Black Stone and kissed it and said “No doubt, I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit anyone nor harm anyone. Had I not seen Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) kissing you I would not have kissed you.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Our esteemed companion, Abdullah bin Umar

Mujahid (رضي الله عنه) says:

Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) was traveling with someone, and they passed by a certain place. Abdullah bin Umar diverted from the path, and when asked why he did so, he replied, “I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passing by this way, so I did the same because he (peace be upon him) had also done so.” (Musnad Ahmad: 4870)

Nafi’ said:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:
Nafi’ said: Ibn Umar heard a pipe, put his fingers in his ears and went away from the road. He said to me: Are you hearing anything? I said: No. He said: He then took his fingers out of his ears and said: I was with the Prophet (ﷺ), and he heard like this and he did like this.
AbuAli al-Lu’lu said: I heard AbuDawud say: This is a rejected tradition. (Sunan Abi Dawud)

Our respected companion, Abdullah bin Masood

Sayyidna Jabir (رضي الله عنه) also narrates:

Jabir said that when God’s Messenger seated himself on the pulpit on a Friday he said, “Sit down.” Ibn Mas’ud heard that and sat down at the door of the mosque, and when God’s Messenger saw him he said, “Come here, ‘Abdallah b. Mas’ud.” (Mishkat al-Masabih)

Our noble companion, Anas bin Malik

Anas bin Sireen said:

Narrated Anas bin Seereen: We went to receive Anas bin Malik when he returned from Sham and met him at a place called ‘Ainat- Tamr. I saw him praying riding the donkey, with his face to this direction, i.e. to the left of the Qibla. I said to him, “I have seen you offering the prayer in a direction other than that of the Qibla.” He replied, “If I had not seen Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) doing it, I would not have done it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Our esteemed companion, Abu Talhah

Sayyidna Anas (رضي الله عنه) said:

Narrated Anas: I was the butler of the people in the house of Abu Talha, and in those days drinks were prepared from dates. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) ordered somebody to announce that alcoholic drinks had been prohibited. Abu Talha ordered me to go out and spill the wine. I went out and spilled it, and it flowed in the streets of Medina. Some people said, “Some people were killed and wine was still in their stomachs.” On that the Divine revelation came: — “On those who believe And do good deeds There is no blame For what they ate (in the past).” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Our respected companion, Khuraim Asadi

The Messenger of Allah (رضي الله عنه) said:

He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to us: One who spends on (the maintenance of) horses (for jihad) is like the one who spreads his hand to give alms (sadaqah) and does not withhold it. (Sunan Abi Dawud)

When everyone removed their shoes during the prayer

Harith bin Abdullah bin Auf, (رضي الله عنهم), narrates:

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri said: While God’s Messenger was leading his companions in prayer he took off his sandals and laid them at his left side; so when the people saw that, they removed their sandals. When he had finished his prayer he asked, “What made you remove your sandals? They replied, “We saw you remove yours, so we removed ours.” God’s Messenger then said, “Gabriel came to me and informed me that there was filth on them. When any of you comes to the mosque he should examine, and if he sees filth on his sandals he should wipe it off and pray in them.”
Abu Dawud and Darimi transmitted it. (Mishkat al-Masabih)

Cooking pots were thrown with enthusiasm

Sayyidna Anas (رضي الله عنه) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) instructed:

Indeed, Allah and His Messenger prohibit you from eating the flesh of domesticated donkeys. As a result, all the cooking pots were turned over, even though they were in the process of cooking the meat. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 4199, Sahih Muslim: 1940)

The female companions were stumbling due to the crowd

Abu Asid Ansari (رضي الله عنه) narrates that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying this while he was leaving the mosque, and people had gathered around him on the way, causing the women to be mixed with the men. At that moment, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to the women:

Narrated AbuUsayd al-Ansari:
AbuUsayd heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say when he was coming out of the mosque, and men and women were mingled in the road: Draw back, for you must not walk in the middle of the road; keep to the sides of the road. Then women were keeping so close to the wall that their garments were rubbing against it. (Sunan Abi Dawud)

The companion of the Prophet (ﷺ) threw a golden ring

Said Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) narrates:

‘Abdallah b. ‘Abbas told that when God’s messenger saw a gold signet-ring on a man’s hand he pulled it off and threw it away saying, “One of you is making for a coal from hell and putting it on his hand.” After God’s messenger had departed someone said to the man, “Take your signet-ring and get some good from it,” but he replied, “No, I swear by God that I shall never take it when God’s messenger has thrown it away.” Muslim transmitted it. (Mishkat al-Masabih)

If it is your command, we will put our horses into the sea

They say in response:

It has been narrated on the authority of Anas that when (the news of) the advance of Abu Sufyan (at the head of a force) reached him. the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) held consultations with his Companions. The narrator said: Abu Bakr spoke (expressing his own views), but he (the Holy Prophet) did not pay heed to him. Then spoke ‘Umar (expressing his views), but he (the Holy Prophet) did not pay heed to him (too). Then Sa’d b. ‘Ubada stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, you want us (to speak). By God in Whose control is my life, if you order us to plunge our horses into the sea, we would do so. If you order us to goad our horses to the most distant place like Bark al-Ghimad, we would do so. The narrator said: Now the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called upon the people (for the encounter). So they set out and encamped at Badr. (Soon) the water-carriers of the Quraish arrived. Among them was a black slave belonging to Banu al-Hajjaj. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) caught him and interrogated him about Abu Sufyan and his companions. He said: I know nothing about Abu Sufyan, but Abu Jahl, Utba, Shaiba and Umayya b. Khalaf are there. When he said this, they beat him. Then he said: All right, I will tell you about Abu Sufyan. They would stop beating him and then ask him (again) about Abu Sufyan. He would again say’, I know nothing about Abu Sufyan, but Abu Jahl. ‘Utba, Shaiba and Umayya b. Khalaf are there. When he said this, they beat him likewise. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was standing in prayer. When he saw this he finished his prayer and said: By Allah in Whose control is my life, you beat him when he is telling you the truth, and you let him go when he tells you a lie. The narrator said: Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: This is the place where so and so would be killed. He placed his hand on the earth (saying) here and here; (and) none of them fell away from the place which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had indicated by placing his hand on the earth. (Sahih Muslim)

Obedience to the Messenger (ﷺ) and our responsibilities

  1. Love the Sunnah more than anything else with all your heart and soul.
  2. In every word and action, obey Allah through obedience to the Messenger of Allah.
  3. Following and obedience require us to stay away from innovations and superstitions.
  4. Neither for us nor for him (the Prophet, (ﷺ)) should any statement or action be considered more valid than his Sunnah. Make the Sunnah widespread in all times.
  5. Never develop close friendship with an innovator who includes innovations in the religion.
  6. Never become part of any gathering, assembly, or ceremony that involves innovations.
