Summary of Surah Al-Jinn
Surah Jinn is a Makki Surah consisting of 28 verses and 2 rukus. This Surah discusses the conversation regarding the Jinn who, like humans, are bound by religious injunctions. Among them are believers and disbelievers, righteous and sinful. The beginning of this Surah narrates how a group of Jinn listened to the Quran and were greatly affected by it. It was at a time when the Jinn sensed some changes in the cosmic system, attempting to ascend towards the heavens, but were intercepted by shooting stars. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) once took some companions towards the region of Nakhla for trade. While performing Fajr prayer at a palm grove, a group of Jinn approached. Upon hearing the Quran, they understood the secrets of the changes and their hearts submitted to the truth of the Quran. Not only did they accept faith themselves, but they also returned to invite their people to faith, proclaiming the glory and greatness of the Lord before them. Those who stubbornly oppose Allah’s commandments were deemed foolish, acknowledging that they are not all unified in belief: some are believers, some are disbelievers; some are obedient, and some are disobedient; some are intelligent, and some are ignorant. Some will enter Hell, while others will enter Paradise. Mentioning the Jinn, this Surah recalls the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) conveying the invitation to faith and monotheism according to Allah’s command. He emphasized that he only calls upon Allah and associates none with Him, declaring that neither benefit nor harm is in his hands; his sole duty is to convey the message of Allah to mankind, and Allah knows that he has indeed conveyed His message to His servants.
