People are entitled to the intercession of the Prophet (ﷺ)
Is there someone who can make intercession with Allah?
The Prophet whom Allah Subhanahoo Wata’ala has chosen for us is indeed mercy for the whole universe. Brother will run away from brother; the world will be that everyone will have his own. In this world of trouble, there will be one person in the whole universe, who will not worry about himself, but about people. When all the great prophets, The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), will not be interceding, then the Prophet (ﷺ) will intercede with the people.
Who are such lucky people?
Those who will be blessed with the intercession of the Messenger of Allah, may God bless them and grant them peace. We should know about it so that we, too, will be entitled to the intercession of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) with the attributes of such people.
I am broken, I am very tired
Keep the lodge, Lord, to be associated with you (ﷺ)
There is no such person who can recommend anyone to Allah Ta’ala without the permission of the Lord. Allah Ta’ala has mentioned this in many places in the Holy Quran. So, He said;
لَيْسَ لَهُم مِّن دُونِهِۦ وَلِىٌّۭ وَلَا شَفِيعٌۭ
with no one other than Him to support or to intercede (6:51)
And said;
قُل لِّلَّهِ ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةُ جَمِيعًۭا
Say, “Intercession belongs entirely to Allah.” (39:44)
The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) as a mediator
It is proven from Qur’an and Hadith that no one will be able to intercede with Allah without Allah’s permission on the Day of Judgment, for whom Allah Almighty will say it will be only for him.
It is also proven that the Prophets, Saints, and righteous people will recommend those who deserve it. But on the Day of Resurrection, the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) will be able to hold the highest position of mediation.
The honor of mediation to the Holy Prophet (ﷺ)
Hadith 1;
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، ح قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا سَيَّارٌ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ـ هُوَ ابْنُ صُهَيْبٍ الْفَقِيرُ ـ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا جَابِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ “ أُعْطِيتُ خَمْسًا لَمْ يُعْطَهُنَّ أَحَدٌ قَبْلِي نُصِرْتُ بِالرُّعْبِ مَسِيرَةَ شَهْرٍ، وَجُعِلَتْ لِيَ الأَرْضُ مَسْجِدًا وَطَهُورًا، فَأَيُّمَا رَجُلٍ مِنْ أُمَّتِي أَدْرَكَتْهُ الصَّلاَةُ فَلْيُصَلِّ، وَأُحِلَّتْ لِيَ الْمَغَانِمُ وَلَمْ تَحِلَّ لأَحَدٍ قَبْلِي، وَأُعْطِيتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ، وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ يُبْعَثُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ خَاصَّةً، وَبُعِثْتُ إِلَى النَّاسِ عَامَّةً ”.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “I have been given five things which were not given to any one else before me. -1. Allah made me victorious by awe, (by His frightening my enemies) for a distance of one month’s journey. -2. The earth has been made for me (and for my followers) a place for praying and a thing to perform Tayammum, therefore anyone of my followers can pray wherever the time of a prayer is due. -3. The booty has been made Halal (lawful) for me yet it was not lawful for anyone else before me. -4. I have been given the right of intercession (on the Day of Resurrection). -5. Every Prophet used to be sent to his nation only but I have been sent to all mankind. (Al-Bukhari)
Hadith 2;
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ “ لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ دَعْوَةٌ مُسْتَجَابَةٌ يَدْعُو بِهَا، وَأُرِيدُ أَنْ أَخْتَبِئَ دَعْوَتِي شَفَاعَةً لأُمَّتِي فِي الآخِرَةِ ”.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “For every prophet there is one (special invocation (that will not be rejected) with which he appeals (to Allah), and I want to keep such an invocation for interceding for my followers in the Hereafter.” (Al-Bukhari)
Hadith 3;
حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ، عَنِ الأَوْزَاعِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ فَرُّوخَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم “ أَنَا سَيِّدُ وَلَدِ آدَمَ وَأَوَّلُ مَنْ تَنْشَقُّ عَنْهُ الأَرْضُ وَأَوَّلُ شَافِعٍ وَأَوَّلُ مُشَفَّعٍ ” .
Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) as saying: I shall be pre-eminent among the descendants of Adam, the first from whom the earth will be cleft open the first intercessor, and the first whose intercession will be accepted. (Abi Dawud)
Who is entitled to the intercession of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ)?
Monotheists
The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) will only recommend the person who has lived his life according to Tawheed.
Hadith 1;
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي سُلَيْمَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، مَنْ أَسْعَدُ النَّاسِ بِشَفَاعَتِكَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم “ لَقَدْ ظَنَنْتُ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ أَنْ لاَ يَسْأَلَنِي عَنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَحَدٌ أَوَّلُ مِنْكَ، لِمَا رَأَيْتُ مِنْ حِرْصِكَ عَلَى الْحَدِيثِ، أَسْعَدُ النَّاسِ بِشَفَاعَتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مَنْ قَالَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، خَالِصًا مِنْ قَلْبِهِ أَوْ نَفْسِهِ ”.
Narrated Abu Huraira: I said: “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! Who will be the luckiest person, who will gain your intercession on the Day of Resurrection?” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: O Abu Huraira! “I have thought that none will ask me about it before you as I know your longing for the (learning of) Hadiths. The luckiest person who will have my intercession on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who said sincerely from the bottom of his heart “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.” (Al-Bukhari)
Hadith 2;
حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمَلِيحِ، عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الأَشْجَعِيِّ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم “ أَتَانِي آتٍ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَبِّي فَخَيَّرَنِي بَيْنَ أَنْ يُدْخِلَ نِصْفَ أُمَّتِي الْجَنَّةَ وَبَيْنَ الشَّفَاعَةِ فَاخْتَرْتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ وَهِيَ لِمَنْ مَاتَ لاَ يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا ”
“The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said ‘Someone came to me from my Lord to give me choice between the half of my Ummah being admitted into Paradise or intercession. So I chose the intercession, and it is for whoever dies and he did not associate anything with Allah.”‘ (at-Tirmidhi)
Reciting the following Dua after the Adhan
Hadith 1;
وَعَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يَسْمَعُ النِّدَاءَ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْقَائِمَةِ آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ حَلَّتْ لَهُ شَفَاعَتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَة» . رَوَاهُ البُخَارِيّ
Jabir reported God’s Messenger as saying: If anyone says when he hears the summons, “O God, Lord of this perfect call and of the prayer which is established for all time, grant Muhammad the wasila and excellency, and raise him up in a praiseworthy position (Al-Qur’an; 17: 79) which Thou hast promised,” he will be assured of my intercession.
Bukhari transmitted it. (Mishkat al-Masabih)
Hadith 2;
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْمُرَادِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ حَيْوَةَ، وَسَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ، وَغَيْرِهِمَا، عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ “ إِذَا سَمِعْتُمُ الْمُؤَذِّنَ فَقُولُوا مِثْلَ مَا يَقُولُ ثُمَّ صَلُّوا عَلَىَّ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَىَّ صَلاَةً صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ بِهَا عَشْرًا ثُمَّ سَلُوا اللَّهَ لِيَ الْوَسِيلَةَ فَإِنَّهَا مَنْزِلَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ لاَ تَنْبَغِي إِلاَّ لِعَبْدٍ مِنْ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ وَأَرْجُو أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا هُوَ فَمَنْ سَأَلَ لِيَ الْوَسِيلَةَ حَلَّتْ لَهُ الشَّفَاعَةُ ” .
‘Abdullah b. Amr b. al-As reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: When you hear the Mu’adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me, for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah; then beg from Allah al-Wasila for me, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allah’s servants, and I hope that I may be that one. If anyone who asks that I be given the Wasila, he will be assured of my intercession. (Sahih Muslim)
Those who pray ten times in the morning and evening on the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
من صلى علي … شفاعتي يوم القيامة
Whoever recites blessings on me ten times in the morning and ten times in the evening will be blessed with my intercession on the Day of Judgment. (صحيح الجامع الصغير)
Prostrations frequent
كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم مما يقول الخادم……فاعني بكثرة السجود
“The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his servant, “Do you have any need?” He said, “O Messenger of God, I have a need.” He said, “What is a need?”
So, he said, “I need you to intercede for me on the Day of Resurrection.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Then perform many prostrations.” ( مسند احمد)
People guilty of significant sins
حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا بِسْطَامُ بْنُ حُرَيْثٍ، عَنْ أَشْعَثَ الْحُدَّانِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ : “ شَفَاعَتِي لأَهْلِ الْكَبَائِرِ مِنْ أُمَّتِي ” .
Narrated Anas ibn Malik:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: My intercession will be for those of my people who have committed major sins. (Sunan Abi Dawud)
Those who died in Medina
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم “ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ أَنْ يَمُوتَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَلْيَمُتْ بِهَا فَإِنِّي أَشْفَعُ لِمَنْ يَمُوتُ بِهَا ” . وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ سُبَيْعَةَ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ الأَسْلَمِيَّةِ . هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ أَيُّوبَ السَّخْتِيَانِيِّ .
Narrated Ibn ‘Umar: that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever is able to die in Al-Madinah, then let him die there, for I will intercede for those who die there.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi)
Therefore, the Prophet (ﷺ) will recommend different people differently on the Day of Judgment.
Mohammed-peace be upon him-said:
On the Day of Resurrection, I will be the imam of all the Prophets, peace be upon them, and I will be the one who talks to Allah Almighty on their behalf, and I will be the one who gives them the right to intercede with Allah Almighty, and I am not proud of this. (Sunan al-Tirmidhi)
May Allah make us also entitled to the intercession of His Beloved (ﷺ) on the Day of Resurrection. Amen then Amen
